The Asphalt Content Tester, also known as Binder Ignition Furnace, determines the asphalt binder content of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and pavement samples through controlled high-temperature combustion. Unlike solvent extraction methods that use hazardous chemicals and require lengthy processing times, this ignition furnace burns off the asphalt binder at 538°C, leaving only the aggregate which is then weighed to calculate binder content — critical data for quality control of asphalt pavement production and forensic investigation of existing pavements.

Asphalt mix design specifies precise binder content, typically 4-6% by weight, because too little binder produces dry, raveling pavement while excess binder causes bleeding, rutting, and premature failure. Highway contractors and testing laboratories use this furnace to verify that plant-produced HMA matches approved mix designs and that in-place pavement contains the specified binder content.

The furnace operates at a controlled working temperature of 538°C (1000°F) with a maximum capacity of 800°C. A sample of HMA (typically 1000-1500 grams) is placed in a wire basket inside the chamber. As the asphalt binder combusts and vaporizes, the integrated precision balance continuously monitors the sample weight. When weight stabilizes (typically after 20-30 minutes), the test is complete and the remaining aggregate weight allows direct calculation of original binder content.
