The Concrete Permeability Test Apparatus measures the resistance of hardened concrete to water penetration under pressure — a fundamental indicator of concrete durability and long-term performance in water-retaining structures, underground construction, and exposed marine environments. Low permeability concrete resists chloride ingress, sulfate attack, and freeze-thaw damage, making permeability testing essential for structures requiring extended service life in aggressive environments.
Concrete permeability governs how quickly moisture, dissolved salts, and aggressive chemicals penetrate into the material, reaching embedded reinforcement and causing corrosion. A water tank with permeable concrete walls may leak continuously, while a bridge deck with high-permeability concrete suffers rapid deterioration from de-icing salt penetration. This apparatus quantifies permeability by measuring the depth of water penetration through cylindrical concrete specimens subjected to controlled hydraulic pressure.
The three-cell configuration allows simultaneous testing of three specimens from the same concrete batch, providing statistical confidence in permeability results while optimizing laboratory efficiency. Each mild steel cell clamps a concrete specimen between sealed plates, with water pressure applied to one face through copper tubing connected to a common pressure chamber. After the specified pressure duration (typically 96 hours at 500 kPa), specimens are split to measure penetration depth.
Durability Assessment Applications:
The apparatus includes three precision-machined steel cells with square or round cross-sections, pressure chamber with pressure gauge, copper tubing and connections, sleeve-packed valves, and mounting stand. The modular design facilitates specimen installation and removal, while the robust construction ensures leak-free operation under sustained test pressures.
